The line between reality and fantasy gets quite blurred at times, which only seems to make people want to discuss the issue more. Martin Scorsese’s new movie Shutter Island deals with the issue of what reality is. Two US Marshals, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, are sent to Shutter Island, ‘home’ for the criminally insane. The Marshals are sent there to track down an escaped inmate; however, events seem to go from bizarre to psychotic the longer they stay on the island.
As the story progresses, the viewer is led deeper and deeper down a ‘rabbit trail.’ What is real? Who is conspiring against whom? Will the questions ever be answered? The twists and turns continue, until they culminate in the ultimate twist, which reveals all the ‘secrets.’
I found Shutter Island enjoyable, but it may not be for the faint of heart. There is enough gore and dramatic tension to stop some people from watching the movie, but I didn’t think it was overdone.
